Intel(R) Desktop Control Center Introduction =============================================== The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center (IDCC) allows you to modify cooling parameters to ensure system stability, optimize performance, and control cooling/acoustic characteristics. You may perform stress tests to verify system and setting stability and conduct performance testing to measure the impact of system configuration and setting modifications. The system gauges provide real time feedback of relevant information so you can observe the effects of various changes. ====================== 2. System Requirements ====================== Intel(R) Desktop Board Requirements -------------------------------------- The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center is supported on the Intel(R) Desktop Boards D925XBC, D925XCV, D915PBL, D875PBZ, and D865PERL. Only systems with 533 MHz and 800 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processors have been validated on IDCC. BIOS Requirements -------------------------------------- You must use the latest BIOS version for your desktop board. To access the latest BIOS version, go to your desktop board's BIOS download site: - Desktop Board D925XBC - http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/bc/bc_bios.htm - Desktop Board D925XCV - http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/cv/cv_bios.htm - Desktop Board D915PBL - http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/bl/bl_bios.htm - Desktop Board D875PBZ - http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/bz/bz_bios.htm - Desktop Board D865PERL - http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_bios.htm Note: The URLs listed above for desktop board BIOSs may change. You can also download the BIOS for your system using http://downloadfinder.intel.com. Operating System -------------------------------------- Microsoft Windows* XP. Display Configuration -------------------------------------- The minimum recommended display configuration is 1024 x 768 pixels with 16-bit color or higher. =============================== 3. Known Issues and Workarounds =============================== The following issues are reported for this release: - Intel(R) Desktop Control Center must be closed before you can use Intel(R) Express BIOS Update to update your BIOS. - If IDCC fails to launch, you may be using an old version of the BIOS. Try updating your BIOS. If IDCC still fails to launch after you have updated the BIOS, shut down your system, wait ten seconds, and then restart your system. For information about which BIOS versions are required by IDCC for your desktop board, refer to the System Requirements section in this document. To download the BIOS for your system, go to http://downloadfinder.intel.com. Always make sure you have the latest version of IDCC installed, also. - The installation process is English only. - If the IDCC installation failed during the SMBus driver installation, make sure you have installed the Intel Chipset INF Update. The Intel(R) Express Installer CD will install the update for you automatically. The INF update may also be downloaded from http://developer.intel.com/. - If you access the help file using the Start menu, only the English version of the help file will launch. To access the localized version of the help file, open the help file from with the Intel(R) Desktop Control Center application. For a list of the languages the help files is available in, see section 4, Documentation, in this readme file. - In some circumstances, the check box labeled "Turn chassis fans off when temperature is below Low Temp", located in the IDCC terminal's Cooling tab, turns off the chassis fans, even when unchecked. - If the system has greater than 2 GB memory, the memory gauge on the IDCC console incorrectly reports zero as the amount of memory. The System subtab, in the IDCC terminal's Reports tab, also incorrectly reports the amount of memory if greater than 2 GB. - On the Intel(R) Desktop Boards D925XBC, D925XCV, and D915PBL, if the CPU fan is set to manual mode when IDCC is launched, the CPU fan appears to be set to automatic mode, though it functions in manual mode. - If you choose a preset and then change settings, you must select a different preset before you selecting the first preset again. - IDCC will overwrite an existing SMBus driver, even if that driver is more recent than the IDCC version of the driver. - Clicking any button that opens a confirmation dialog box multiple times will open multiple dialog boxes. Respond to the dialog box before continuing work in IDCC. - In some cases one sensor controls two or three fans. Adjusting one such fan's slider will cause the other fan's slider(s) to adjust accordingly. - The fan control's manual mode setting is for testing only and if set to low, may not cool your system sufficiently, which could result in overheating your system and possibly damaging or shortening the life of system components. - Changing screen resolution or color depth causes the application to exit. - Although only one instance of the IDCC application runs on the desktop, the Windows Task Manager displays three instances of the application. - Some fans incorrectly report their speed when controlled by Intel(R) Precision Cooling technology. The problem is with the fan’s ability to report its speed, and not necessarily its ability to spin at its selected speed. As a workaround, you can try using a different fan model, a fan from a different manufacturer, or disable Intel Precision Cooling technology altogether (in the BIOS). To disable Intel Precision Cooling technology: a. During system boot up, press F2. b. Once in the BIOS, use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Advanced" Tab. c. Then navigate down to the "Fan Control Configuration," and press the "Enter" key. d. Set "Fan Control" to "Disabled." e. Finally, press F10 to save changes and exit the BIOS. - On Intel(R) Desktop Boards D875PBZ and D865PERL, clicking the “Apply Now” button to reset defaults, for non-default values saved in AGP/PCI burn-in mode, does not work currently. Click the “Save & Reboot” button to set your changes. - On Intel(R) Desktop Boards D875PBZ and D865PERL, saving and rebooting when both burn-in modes are set to default disables burn-in mode. To enable burn-in mode, mark the "Enable Burn-In mode" check box in the Tune tab's Burn-In subtab. - On Intel(R) Desktop Boards D875PBZ and D865PERL, if Intel(R) Desktop Control Center has been installed on your system before you installed Intel(R) Active Monitor (version 1.19 or earlier), Intel Active Monitor will fail to install. This occurs because Intel Active Monitor (version 1.19 and earlier) has an older version of SMBus driver than Intel Desktop Control Center. If you install Intel Active Monitor before Intel Desktop Control Center, there is no conflict. As a workaround for installing Intel Active Monitor (version 1.19 or earlier) even after Intel Desktop Control Center has been installed on the system: 1. Download Intel Active Monitor from www.intel.com/design/motherbd/active.htm. 2. In your Windows Toolbar, go to Start + Run and browse to select the file you just saved. 3. Click OK. 4. In the Run dialog box, make sure the cursor is at the right of the field's entry and add these command line options: "-a -nosmbus" For example, if you saved the file to C:\Temp, the entry would be: "C:\Temp\IntelActiveMonitor.exe -a -nosmbus." - Installing over a previous version of IDCC could cause some graphic display issues in the software. Uninstall and reinstall the software to make sure the software’s graphics appear correctly. - Switching users in the operating system causes the application to exit. - Running a stress test on a system with 256 MB (or less) of memory may cause the test to halt and generate an error. - If large fonts are enabled, IDCC may not display correctly. - Right-clicking the IDCC icon on the taskbar results in moving the IDCC main console, but not the terminal or the fan tray. - The help files for the Stress Test application and Performance Index tool, which can both be accessed by clicking on the black buttons on the bottom of the main IDCC console, are available only in English. - Pressing the F1 key does not launch the help file. ================ 4. Documentation ================ The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center is documented using the following information sources: - Readme.TXT Provides basic information including: system requirements, known issues, and legal information. - Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in English) that presents additional information. - zh_CN\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in Simplified Chinese) that presents additional information. - de_DE\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in German) that presents additional information. - ja_JP\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in Japanese) that presents additional information - ko_KR\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in Korean) that presents additional information. - ru_RU\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in Russian) that presents additional information. - es_ES\Intel_(R)_Desktop_Control_Center.chm Provides a Windows HTML help file (in Spanish) that presents additional information. ================================== 5.
